Hydrogen is an energy resource that is easy to transport and store and can be produced in a climate-neutral way using certain processes. Hydrogen can serve as a CO2-neutral energy supplier for many industrial sectors. Accordingly, hydrogen plays a crucial role in the decarbonisation of the economy as well as in a green energy future.

The project “H2 Backbone WAG + Penta-West” is closely coordinated with other initiatives to expand the hydrogen infrastructure, such as the “H2EU + Store” project – which aims to boost the market for green hydrogen for Central Europe – and the “SoutH2Corridor”, which aims to transport hydrogen from North Africa via Italy.

Austria's industry needs considerable amounts of hydrogen, as shown by a survey of Austrian major consumers conducted by Austrian Gas Grid Management (AGGM) in spring 2022. Industrial consumers estimate their demand at 12 terawatt hours (TWh) by 2030 and 47 TWh of hydrogen by 2040. It is therefore all the more important to continue the expansion of the hydrogen infrastructure in order match the rising demand.

Hydrolysis can be used to produce hydrogen in a climate-neutral way. For this purpose, electricity from renewable sources, such as wind or sun, is used to split water into oxygen and hydrogen. The CO2-free hydrogen produced in this way is gaseous and can be fed into the existing gas infrastructure. In this way, excess renewable energy that is not required in the power grid during production can be stored in the form of green hydrogen and used as needed. The technology is referred to as power-to-gas.
